When plaque and tartar are allowed to buildup it can begin to irritate/infect the gums and cause redness, bleeding and swelling. If left untreated it can lead to more serious problems such as gum disease (periodontal disease), which is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Periodontal disease, which is usually painless in its early stages, has been linked to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, osteoporosis, premature births, lung disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, early detection and treatment are paramount in the successful management of the disease. This treatment usually consists of through, but gentle cleaning of the affected areas to remove all of the bacteria and build up. After treatment our hygienist will discuss a home care regiment tailored specifically for each patient that will help you maintain a healthy mouth.

On occasion, we are presented with a case of very advanced periodontal disease which we may refer to a periodontal specialist. However, with through regular cleanings combined with education in the proper brushing and flossing techniques we can easily treat and most importantly prevent gum disease.
